How To Join A Hiking Club – Why Hiking with Others Matters

How To Join A Hiking Club - Group of Hikers

If you are new to hiking or are considering starting hiking, I strongly recommend joining a hiking club. I guarantee it will change your hiking experience. In my opinion, unless you are a highly experienced hiker, solo hikes are not recommended. Most of my hiking, over the past 40 years, has been with clubs. A hiking club might just be what you need to make your time on the trail more fun, motivating, and rewarding.

Understanding how to join a hiking club, what they offer and what to look for in a club, will help make your choice easier.

Let’s dive into why joining a hiking club is a great idea, and how you can find the right one for you.

Finding a Local Hiking Club

A quick online search can help you find hiking groups in your area. Look for clubs that align with your interests, fitness level, and goals. Contact the club to check if their activities match what you’re looking for. Most clubs will have a sample walks program to give you an idea of what’s on offer. Don’t hesitate to ask about the pace, difficulty, or style of hikes available.

Cubs also offer free trial walks before you have to commit and pay for a membership. Some clubs even run training walks for new walkers, mine does. Look for a club that offers a variety of walks with different grades. Many clubs offer other activities such as cycling, canoeing and canyoning in addition to hiking.

Once you’ve decided on a club, and have been approved as a prospective member, start with an easier graded walk. Some clubs offer urban walks, which are a great way to start and get used to walking longer distances. You usually have to contact the walk leader and give them an indication of your fitness and hiking ability. The leaders are trained to lead participants of all levels so don’t feel intimidated.

Often, you have to complete a designated number of hikes at a certain grade before you become a qualified member. You usually have a full calendar year to achieve this. Once you are a qualified member you earn all the benefits that a club offers.

Fun and Friendship of Hiking Clubs

Hiking is always better with friends! Joining a hiking club gives you the opportunity to meet like-minded people who share your passion for the outdoors. Whether you’re walking through lush forests or enjoying a mountain vista, being part of a group makes the experience even more enjoyable. Clubs are welcoming to new members, so you don’t need to worry about fitting in. You’ll find plenty of people to share stories with and create memories along the way.

Safety and Guidance

One of the key benefits of joining a hiking club is safety. Hiking with others means you’re better prepared for any unexpected situations that might arise. Many clubs offer experienced leaders who can provide valuable knowledge on navigation, such as map reading and using a compass. Clubs often offer navigation and leadership courses. There’s also safety in numbers, meaning if an emergency occurs, you’ll have support. So, not only will you have more fun, but you’ll also feel more secure on your adventures. My club covers 50% of the cost to do a First Aid course.

Ever had those days when you just don’t feel like getting out of bed, let alone hitting the trail? Joining a hiking group helps you stay motivated to get outside. Being part of a community gives you the extra push to lace up your boots and go. The best part? Most groups are about enjoying the experience, not racing to the finish line. You’ll improve your fitness at your own pace while enjoying the company of others.

New Adventures and Activities

One of the most exciting things about joining a hiking club is the chance to explore new places. Clubs often organize trips to locations you might not have considered on your own, whether local trails, national parks, or even international adventures. Some clubs also introduce members to unique activities like snow hiking, paddling, or bike rides. This variety helps keep things fresh and can lead to some unforgettable experiences!

Connection and Support

There’s something special about being part of an outdoor community. When you hike with a group, you naturally build strong connections with others. Hiking clubs provide a supportive environment where you’ll feel valued and encouraged to grow. Whether you’re trying something new or facing a challenge, your fellow hikers will be there to cheer you on. Plus, you get to share those “we did it!” moments, which makes everything more rewarding.

Confidence and Inclusivity

If you’re worried about being the slowest in the group or not fitting in, don’t be! Most hiking clubs are inclusive and welcoming to people of all fitness levels and ages. Many groups focus on enjoying the journey rather than rushing to the end. An experienced hiker is nominated to walk last to offer support and, ensure all hikers complete the hike safely. Even if you’re nervous about joining, you’ll quickly find that confidence builds over time. And if one club isn’t the right fit, that’s okay! Finding the right group is part of the adventure.

Positive Impact on Mental Health

Hiking has well-documented benefits for mental health, like reducing stress and depression. But did you know that hiking with a group can enhance those benefits? Being surrounded by nature while enjoying the camaraderie of a group can help you feel more connected, not just to the world around you but also to yourself. It’s a powerful way to recharge both physically and mentally.

Cost-Effective Adventures

Exploring the outdoors doesn’t have to break the bank. Most hiking trips require minimal costs, like fuel, food, and gear. Many hiking clubs organize regular outings that are affordable and accessible to everyone. Carpooling and public transport accessible hikes are often the norm. You’ll get to experience incredible new places without spending a fortune!

My Final Thoughts

Hiking clubs have enabled me to enjoy hiking all over the world. I love being an active member of a community and enjoying the great outdoors with like minded fellow hikers. I even have a handful of leaders that I follow, who lead hikes, that appeal to my sense of adventure. So, give a club a try and Happy Hiking!
